OK, we've all heard the noise. The Reverend Jerry Falwell is finding queerness just about everywhere, whether it's a psychadelic kid's show or the Nation of Scotland.

We here at And The Horse You Rode In On get the feeling that, perhaps, there's more to this phobia than meets the eye. What is it about homosexuals that bothers the Good Reverend? That it's forbidden in Deuteronomy? Actually, the King James version says it like this: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination" (Leviticus 20:13). Now, we know that it's physically impossible for a man to lie with a man as he does with a woman, 'cause the anatomy just don't work that way, if you see what I mean. Unless, of course, this is an injunction against men having anal sex with women. Think about it.

In any case, our real beef with the Reverend is not his obsession with this particular passage. It's the fact that he completely ignores some of these other laws (which all also invoke the heavy word "abomination":

  • Eating anything "...that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you..." (Leviticus 11:10), not to mention rabbits, snakes or other reptiles, hares, pigs, etc.
  • Desiring or taking the gold and silver from which idol worshippers make their idols (Deuteronomy 7:25)
  • Women wearing men's clothing, or the reverse (Deuteronomy 22:5)
  • The making of a graven or molten image (Deuteronomy 27:15)
  • "A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren." (Proverbs 6:17-19)
When Reverend Falwell starts condemning people who look with pride with the same vehemence that he condemns homosexuals, maybe we'll start giving him some credence.
